The Buddhists have been present in Serbia since the twenties of XX century. The history of Buddhism in Serbia begins with the arrival of the Kalmyks community of the West-Mongolian people of the Buddhist faith who fled from Russia after the October Revolution in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Kalmyks built their temple in 1929 in Zvezdara, at the border with Mali Mokri Lug, and they were granted permission by King Aleksandar Karadjordjevic. Fomer Buddhist temple in Belgrade was the first Buddhist temple in Europe. The Second World War and the victory of communism led the Kalmyks to seek rescue in 1944 in Western Europe and the United States.
Twenty years ago, a group of individuals from Serbia were interested in the original Buddha's teaching (Dhamma) and since then they have been working to promote proven Buddhist techniques and methods of developing inner peace and harmony, with special emphasis on virtue, meditation, wisdom and compassion.
In March 2009 they were registered as citizens' association and started publishing activity.
According to Theravad, Buddhist society, Middle Way, which is opening the monastery, with the Buddhist center in Cortanovci, Buddhist monks will not be in Serbia only occasionally, but will stay there permanently.
