In the sixth months since the re-establishment of the direct Belgrade-New York airline, after 25 years, the national airline Air Serbia has transported more than 40,000 passengers.

To Sinisa Mali, president of the Supervisory Board of Air Serbia, this proves that the decision to re-establish the flights has been more than justified and that a further increase in the number of passengers can be expected in the coming period.

– We have achieved more than we have hoped. Much more passengers are flying the direct Belgrade-New York route than we have expected and I believe that this is a true indicator that the decision to re-open the line was a sound one – Mali said.

– Furthermore, we have managed to position Belgrade and Serbia as a dominant regional center – Mali says and points out that Serbia is the only one of the 11 countries in the region providing direct flights to New York with its national airline.

– This means a lot. People coming from North America to this region make the first stop in Belgrade, and then go to Sarajevo, Zagreb, Sofia... With this, we have positioned our country and its capital as the regional center, which has been the goal all along – Mali emphasizes.

He adds that direct flights to China, although carried out by Chinese companies, will contribute to Belgrade and Serbia’s role as a bridge between the East and the West. – This is what’s the most important for our economic and political development – Mali points out.

– The results achieved in the past six months have shown that we are on the right track, and I expect the trend of the growth of the number of passengers and even better results in 2017 – Mali says.

The direct Belgrade-New York line officially opened on June 23, when an Airbus A330, bearing the YU500 mark, took off from the Nikola Tesla Airport. Air Serbia flies the route five times a week, and the aircraft has 254 seats – 236 in the economy class and 18 in the business class.
