All works on modernizing the Belgrade-Pancevo railway and constructing the accompanying infrastructure have been completed, and the first deputy director of RZD International in Serbia, Mansurbek Sultanov, said on December 21 that the speed of the trains would increase from around 50 to 120 km/h.

– An external commission for the technical acceptance of the works on the Belgrade-Pancevo has started working today, which is necessary in order to acquire the exploitation permit. We have fully completed all the contracted works, as well as the additional ones – Sultanov said for Tanjug.

The project was financed by the Russian loan for the modernization of Serbian railways. The value of the investment in the Belgrade-Pancevo railway is USD 91 million, of which 78 million from the loan and 13 million (15%) from the budget of Serbia.

– The project entailed the reconstruction and modernization of the existing tracks and the construction of completely new tracks and a return to the projected speed of 120 km/h – Sultanov pointed out.

Sultanov says that nearly USD 6 million has been saved in the basic works, which was used for the Serbian railway infrastructure.

Three bridges have been built, of which the bridge across the Tamis, around 240 m long, is completely new, as well as two overpasses at the Zrenjanin Road, the Sebes stop, the Ovca and Krnjaca stations and other facilities.

Sultanov said for Tanjug that Serbian companies had participated in more than 50% of the works in the realization of the project, even though the contract had envisioned the participation of 30%.

He added that the local companies involved in the construction were ZGOP, Energoprojekt – Niskogradnja, Gemaks and others.

– The biggest problem were unforeseen additional works due to the ground, but also mistakes in the project documentation. Nevertheless, it was all solved in time – Sultanov said.

He said that he didn't expect considerable delays in opening the railway to traffic, as the paperwork would take around a month and the testing period approximately three months.
