Google’s operating system Android acquired a record breaking 87.5% share of the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2016, Strategy Analytics reports.

The research shows that Android’s market share has increased from 84.1% in the corresponding quarter of 2015, whereas the market share of Apple iOS has dropped from 13.6% to 12.1%.

– Android’s leadership of the global smartphone market looks unassailable at the moment – says Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics and adds that its low-cost services and user-friendly software remain attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide.

He adds that several challenges remain for Google, which offers its system to producers free-of-charge.

The report says that the global shipment of smartphones has increased by 6% annually to 375.4 million units in the third quarter, making for the fastest annual growth rate.

According to the research, the market share of other operating systems, including Windows and Blackberry, has dropped from 2.3% to 0.3%.
