Notaries have completed nearly a million notarial acts in a little over two years, says the president of the Chamber of Notaries of Serbia, Miodrag Djukanovic.

– We have done quite a thorough job since September 2014. In 2014, we had 110,878 completed notarial deeds, last year we had 453,217, and by this July, we had 338,962 deeds, which amounts to nearly a million deeds completed – Djukanovic said.

As he says, these data show by how much the work of the courts was facilitated in the past two years, when it comes to certifying documents, statements and contracts, seeing how those jobs were made the responsibility of notaries. Last summer, notaries were also put in charge of probate procedures.

Notaries' activities now cover almost the entire territory of Serbia, with the exception of the jurisdiction of 12 basic courts, mostly in municipalities where the people are poorer and the economic situation harder. In those areas, as he said, it is not in the interest of notaries to perform their activities, seeing how the taxes are extremely high.

– After we pay the VAT of 20%, the gross income is reduced by 30%, which is the amount of tax meant for improving the judicial system. Due to this, it is very difficult to organize the operation of notary offices in an economically viable manner in smaller places – Djukanovic said.
