BEK in bankruptcy again – Creditors of Zrenjanin meat industry announce suit

Zrenjanin meat industry BEK has ended up in bankruptcy again. Instead of repaying the creditors from the sales proceedings and possibly starting the production, the owners of BEK, i.e. Novi Bek, the Bestic family, have requested the initiation of a bankruptcy procedure in Belgrade, as the headquarters of the company have been moved.

– This is unheard of and I believe that the case will eventually reach Strasbourg – one of the biggest creditors, Marinel Mendrea, says bitterly.

– Instead of the Commercial Court of Zrenjanin selling the property, the process kept stretching out and we've now reached another bankruptcy procedure, which will be carried out in Belgrade, although the entire property is in Zrenjanin. Every day, trucks enter the factory premises and everything that can be taken out is moved. Nobody knows when the inventory will be listed, who will do it and what will be left.

A group of entrepreneurs, including Mendrea, invested EUR 1.5 million in BEK in and started the production in 2010. However, only a year later, Novi Bek was founded and the old company was left with nothing. The five years of agony started then.

– I can't comprehend how the state can act with such indifference towards the case! I claim that numerous mistakes have been made and that the bankruptcy didn't have to happen and shouldn't have happened – Mendrea emphasizes.

The property, the sale of which should have been used to repay the creditors, has been estimated at RSD 400 million and includes the head office building, the laboratory, warehouses, facilities and the accompanying land – practically everything left over from BEK.
