Late 2018 realistic for initiation of construction of Belgrade subway – Analysis on first line soon

It's realistic to expect that the construction of the first Belgrade subway line will begin in late 2018, stated the mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, in Sofia on Tuesday, September 27.

– If everything goes according to plan, we could start dealing with financing and preparing the project next year, so that we could start building the first subway line in late 2018, which is a realistic projection – Mali emphasized.

– There are projects which are changing the face of Belgrade. Belgrade Waterfront is one of them, and the subway is another. Strategically, Belgrade is oriented towards building a subway, to initiating the construction after decades of deliberating it – Mali said.

According to him, a smart analysis will be performed by mid-November, which will point to the optimal place for the construction of the first subway line.

Sofia builds three kilometers of subway a year, stated Mali, after having visited a subway station under construction and the Dispatch center for managing the subway.

– In the past ten years, 30 km of subway have been built in Sofia. This has contributed to the city's development in the sections where subway stations are located and that is what we wish to do in Belgrade as well – Mali said.

He noted that the subway in Sofia connected the airport, the main railway station and the main business centers and said that it was that kind of connectivity that changed a city for the better and contributed to its development.

The mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, said that the subway construction project in Sofia had been the largest strategic project in Bulgaria in the previous few years.

– We have doubled the length of the subway lines in the past six years. We have built 40 km, and we are currently building another 12 km – Fandakova said.
