The reconstruction of the Old Sava Bridge, which entails the construction of pedestrian structures, will link the Sava's left and right bank, and will begin in mid-2017, announced the mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, and pointed out that it was just one of the many projects that would turn Belgrade into a modern European capital in the next three years.

The plan, according to the mayor, is to reconstruct Kneza Mihaila St and install a cable car between Kalemegdan and the new park at Usce, which will contain sports courts, a planetarium, an aquarium, a mini aqua park, an amusement park and gyms.

– This way, we will bring Belgrade down to its rivers and offer the people of Belgrade and tourists alike new places to relax, rest and enjoy themselves. This is the tendency of all large cities of the world, to have more green areas, more youth content and tourists attractions – the mayor pointed out.

According to him, the construction of the cable car structure should begin next September or October, while the Usce park project will be completed by the end of this year. The park will be fully adjusted to children and the young.

The mayor pointed out that, in September 2017, the reconstruction of the Old Sava Bridge would begin, turning it into a footbridge with two lanes for road traffic and two lanes for tram tracks, green areas and sitting spots.

He said that Belgrade wished to make the most beautiful bridge in the part of Europe and emphasized that the USA's best architects were employed on the job.

– Imagine a modern Belgrade – in three years, you will be walking down a reconstructed Kneza Mihaila St, downtown Belgrade will be a pedestrian zone, you'll be taking a cable car from Kalemegdan to Usce and its completely reconstructed park, and then across the footbridge to the Sava promenade, leading to Ada Ciganlije on its right and to the 25. maj promenade on its left – Mali explained his “vision of Belgrade on both rivers”.

He pointed out that all the projects were being carried out with the support of the Government of Serbia and the prime minister and that they would be financed from the city and state budgets and the EBRD's credit lines.

– The city has enough money for these projects, we have saved some of it, and some will come from the credit lines provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and development, whereas a part will come from the government. We are working together to change Belgrade – Mali emphasized.

The city architect, Milutin Folic, points out that the reconstruction of the railway bridge at the main bus station entails separate pedestrian and bicycle lanes, green areas and benches.

– A similar example is the well-known High Line park in New York, formerly a railway, now a promenade and quite possible the biggest attraction in the city – Folic said and emphasized that turning the Old Sava Bridge into a footbridge with bicycle lanes was also planned.

From Banovo Brdo to Delta City mall by cable car

Ac Blic writes, the construction of a cable car which should connect Kosutnjak, Banovo Brdo, Ada Ciganlija and New Belgrade at the Delta City mall is still an option.

The total length will amount to around four kilometers, and the elevation will be 12 meters.
