The reconstruction of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade started in late August and is planned to be completed by May 19, 2017.
The completion deadline period is 270 days, following which the museum's collection will be returned to the building and a new permanent exhibition set up.
– We expect that the reconstructed building of the Museum of Contemporary Art at Usce will open for visitors in late 2017 – the institution says for eKapija.
RSD 689 million for works
The reconstruction, adaptation and extension of the building of the Museum of Contemporary Art has been waited for for nine years. So far, the first phase of works has been completed, encompassing the reconstruction of the roof, arrangement of basement depots and workshops, as well as moving the energy unit (the substation) from the museum's basement to a new facility.
The works to follow entail construction and finishing works, mechanical and electrical works and planning and performing works on extending the facility's technical security system.
The types of works include architectural and construction works, thermal and technical installations, electric energy installations, electrical engine facility and centralized supervision and management system, telecommunications and signal installations, water and sewer system installation, a fright elevator and a disabled access platform.
The total cost of the works amounts to RSD 689 million, of which RSD 654 million is meant for adaptation and reconstruction, and the rest for planning and performing the works on extending the facility's technical security system, which will be carried out by Smart Building Technologies.
The group of contractors is headed by the Belgrade-based Termoinzenjering, and the other members of the group are Koto, Ex Ing B&P and Termovent-Komerc from Belgrade, along with the group of subcontractors, consisting of TVI from Belgrade, Termo TIM from New Belgrade, Magmont from Pirot and ALP Inzenjering from Rusanj.
New permanent exhibitions
The museum emphasizes that an expert team has been preparing the implementation of a new permanent exhibition for a long time. The exhibition will present a fresh interpretation of the 20th century Yugoslav art and contemporary art from the museum's collection in line with modern art historical and museological trends.
Among the museum's priorities are large exhibitions which they plan to realize in cooperation with numerous partner institutions from the region, Europe, but also the world.
– We will especially focus on retrospective exhibitions of local artists, which can only be realized under the standards provided by the reconstructed buildings – the Museum says.
The acting director of the museum, Slobodan Nakarada, pointed out after the reconstruction had begun that the museum was doing its best to complete the works in a quality and timely fashion.
We will start one of our hardest battles, he said, and that is to bring back the audience which has disappeared.
