Sugar factory Sajkaska back in operation

Following a one-year break, the sugar factory Sajkaska in Zabalj has started operating again. The stoking of the fire in the lime furnace brought light to the homes of around a hundred workers and their families as well.

– A considerable number of workers went to Crvenka. That's where the campaigned was carried out. We came here, did the job and now we're continuing further – says the president of the Autonomous Trade Union, Petar Jojkic.

The optimistic management of Sajkaska is also openly expressing the satisfaction over the continued production.

– During last year's campaign, we decided to support the growth of areas under sugar beet. We have raised purchase prices for producers. We have involved science institutions and invested in production facilities. Starting today, we believe that these efforts will prove to be justified. Our plan is to have more sugar beet, more sugar and to export more – said General Manager Petros Gemintzis.

Putting Sajkaska back in operation will create jobs for a considerable number of seasonal workers as well, whose families are also supported by the sugar business.
