The public administration has let go 14,500 employees, by which Serbia has met the condition of the fourth and the fifth review of the arrangement with the IMF, reported Vecernje Novosti in the June 17 issue. The newspaper wrote that 8,511 employees had left the Central Serbian authorities, 250 had left those in the AP of Vojvodina, and 5,751 had left the local authorities.

The article said that it was possible that the number of workers would exceed the plan.

The state committed itself to the rationalization of the number of employees by the agreement with the IMF. At the end of last year, the Government’s decisions regarding the maximum number of employees in the public sector were adopted and the initial deadline was February 2016.

It was envisioned that, of a total of 514,573 people who were employed in the public sector in December 2014, 500,061 were supposed to keep their permanent contracts.

According to the data by the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government at the time, 14,512 were supposed to lose their jobs.
