The river passenger cruiser MPS Thomas Hardy, with a value of EUR 20 million, was ceremoniously christened at Vahali shipyard in Sremska Mitrovica on Thursday.
The new ship is a property of the Swiss company Scylla AG, it is 135 meters long, 11.45 meters wide, and weighs 1,100 tonnes. This passenger cruiser can accommodate 172 passengers in 76 cabins and 10 suites.
Vahali, which has been in the shipbuilding business continuously for nearly 90 years, signed an agreement on cooperation with the owner of Belgrade-based shipyard in 2005 and then commenced its big renovation and equipped it with EUR 2.5 million worth of state-of-the-arts machines and tools.
In the period 2006-2016, Vahali built hulls for more than 50 dredges, three tankers, three river container ships, one maritime container ship, and over 25 river passenger ships. The shipyard Vahali in Zasavica near Sremska Mitrovica, established in 2013, is the biggest and the most important shipyard of that company in the region. Aside from building ships, the shipyard also does all kinds of overhauls in the shipbuilding sector.
The buyer of MPS Thomas Hardy, Swiss company Scylla AG, has been an operator of luxury cruises on European rivers for more than 30 years. Until this year, Vahali built over 13 ships of the kind for the Swiss company.
