Presenting the project, Chief Architect Jordi Fauli said that in ten years, upon the completion of the central 'Tower of Jesus Christ', the tallest of the six, the famous basilica attracting millions of tourists every year would enter the record books, the daily Novosti reports. He reminded that the tallest church tower at the moment was Ulm in Germany at 162 meters. However, St. Peter's Basilica in Rome will remain the tallest church in Europe because of its central nave.
Construction of the Church of the Holy Family, a symbol and the main tourist attraction of the Catalonian capital, commenced in 1882. So far, this church has been 70% completed and its tallest part is 112 meters tall.
As Fauli pointed out, construction of the tower and major part of the church structure, which should be finished by 2016, in time for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death, still goes on schedule. He also noted that certain elements, such as decoration, would remain unfinished.
This cathedral is placed under the protection of UNESCO in 1984 as a world heritage site.
