(Daniel Goleman) Vision, energy, creativity, loyalty and positive attitude versus disdain, non-support, indecency, cowardice and vanity – this is how the audience of dr. Daniel Goleman, the author of famous best seller "Emotional intelligence" made difference between good and bad leader. In continuation of lecture in Belgrade which famous expert held on Friday as a guest of Mokra gora school of management, the audience’s opinion proved to be absolutely correct.

Emotional intelligence is the ability of managing oneself – own emotions and needs and a sense for emotions of others - Goleman said at the beginning of lecture. How we use it, how it can improve, why it is important and how it helps us at work we perform is something the American psychologist tries for more than two hours to near to listeners in a full hall of the Sava center. He outlines as the most important factors of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, empathy and merge of all that into a winning combination.

Leaders and emotions

An emotionally intelligent person is well familiar with his or her own feelings and governs hem, can keep emotions under control especially disturbing and destructive ones which can cause damage both to him or her and other people as well. This person understands how other people feel, why they behave in some kind of a manner and what initiates their behavior. Emotional intelligence describes ability to efficiently maintain relation between emotions and opinion, to use emotions to facilitate judgment and to make intelligent decisions on emotions.

All of that is, Goleman said, a feature of good leader whose decisions affect success of managing and harmony in organization and society.

- Successful leadership is an art of work with others– the American psychologist claims.

Emotional intelligence of leaders and employees is directly connected to efficient work and contributes to successful business. Although it is important for a life of each individual and desirable at every job, it is especially important with people at managerial positions.

Goleman therefore sees a leader as a center – entire team’s mood depends on his mood. He must be extremely communicative, to listens and reacts accordingly. These traits make a good leader: vision, as ability to make decisions which will positively affect the future, learning since he must be focused on staff development, direct approach on work with others and creation of harmony in relations and democracy since work should be carried out through cooperation and agreement.

Empathy can be learnt

Unlike cognitive intelligence which is unchangeable over life, American professor claims emotional intelligence can develop and promote.

- Psychological study show that between 15 and 20% of babies at the planet is shy. However, one researcher monitored them and defined that parents can help them overcome genetic shyness, insecurity and introversion –Goleman said.

As he explained, emotional brain is developed by mid-twenties through interaction with environment. However, our emotional life is full of bad habits which we should change and it takes time, motivation and feedback if we do something well, whether we listen to others actively and respect their feelings.

The most efficient way of communication, Goleman outlines, is face to face since we are genetically determined for that communication, feedback and reaction of others to our behaviors which we get instantly. With a slight worry, he outlines technology is changing standards of our communication and attention as well as that it is essential to find a balance between virtual communication and personal work.

In an interesting way he commented a word of a modern age, multitasking, and featured it as a counter-productive – “it is myth since a man has ability to change focus of his attention quickly but it is not possible that he is focused on more than one activity at the same time”

Small steps, great acts

Srdjan Janicijevic, a founder and a head of Mokra gora school of management thanked dr Golenman for his visit to Belgrade and inspirational lecturing.
