Production for export at Mitros factory from February 2016
“Mitros will begin a so-called pilot production by the end of the year and is legally obliged to continue it for three months. After this period, sometime in February, production for export will begin. Starting production also means hiring more people”, said Vladimir Petković, head of the City Administration of Urban Planning, Communal and Inspection Affairs of the City of Sremska Mitrovica.
Petković commented on last week`s official visit of representatives of Sremska Mitrovica Municipality to the Gierlinger Holding factory in Bucharest, Romania, one of their three production plants including the one in Sremska Mitrovica.
The aim of the visit was for the representatives of Sremska Mitrovica to familiarise themselves with the appearance of the plant, equipment and facilities and the way the plant works, to gain insight into how production in Mitrovica will look and work.
“The Bucharest plant has been expanded and now has a staff of 550. What I could observe and conclude is that Mitros is far larger, so I expect a larger production and number of employees than in the Romanian plant”, said Petković. He added that Mitros is even larger than the plant operating in Hungary.
The start of production in Mitros was initially announced for October, but due to unplanned reconstruction works at the plant, that deadline has been extended to the end of the year.
The owner`s idea is to establish cooperation with around 1,200 suppliers whose number would gradually increase. The target for the first year is 1,000 pigs processed daily, and then in each following year 1,000 more, until it reaches 5,000 pigs processed every day.
After several years of bankruptcy Mitros was sold to the Austrian company Gierlinger Holding in mid-January for EUR 800,000. Reconstruction works began in April, and the overall investment in what used to be a Mitrovica meat giant will amount to some EUR 20 million, according to Ozon.
