The European Union has started working on a regulation that would make it possible for certain members to place a ban on the importation of genetically modified crops even if it is approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
EU members have recently been given such an option in regard to growing genetically modified crops.
This proposal of the European Commission will be taken into consideration by the European Parliament and will also be discussed by member countries.
European Food Safety Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said that "member countries will be given greater rights to use genetically modified organisms approved in the EU, in food and nutrition in their territory."
