Members of the Serbian Parliament adopted Wednesday (21 January 2015) amendments to the Law on Public Notaries and a set of related laws, thus creating conditions to unblock the work of the judiciary. Adoption of these amendments is exceptionally important because it puts an end to a four-month strike of Serbian lawyers.
Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic said that the government of Serbia had adopted the amendments in their original form as put forth by lawyers' representatives, stressing that controversial issues had been defined with regard to the existence of public notary register, contracts on real estate sales, and the procedure to ratify legal affairs, so-called solemnization. On the other hand, representatives of the opposition find Selakovic responsible for the "paralysis of the judiciary" because he stubbornly insisted on matters that he is now annulling by filing law amendments, and they also demanded his resignation.

The debate was also attended by representatives of lawyers, and President of the Serbian Bar Chamber Dragoljub Djordjevic told reporters that lawyers would resume their work as soon as the amendments to the Law on Public Notaries entered into force.

He also said that the request to replace Minister Selakovic was still in force, but not as a condition for ending the protest.
