The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia has published the tender seeking a consulting company for the preparation of a spatial plan, a feasibility study with a preliminary project and an environmental impact assessment study for the reconstruction and modernization of the Ruma-Sabac-Donja Borina-state border railroad.

As said, Serbia got a loan of EUR 102 million (EUR 51 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and as much from the French Development Agency) for the first phase of the project of the modernization of the rail sector. This is a multiphase program approach, which will be carried out in three phases, which overlap over a ten-year period. Part of the income is intended for paying for said consulting services.

The reconstruction and modernization of the entire railroad is planned, so as to reach a speed of 120 km/h. There will also be works on the construction of fixed electric traction installations (electrification by a 25 kV/50 Hz system), the renovation of the station structures along the railroad, the digitization of the telecommunications, the raising of the protection level and so on.

The details of the tender can be seen HERE.

Railroad around 107 km long

The Ruma-Sabac-Donja Borina-Bosnia and Herzegovina border is a one-track, non-electrified railroad around 107 kilometers long, which doesn’t meet the modern transportation requirements.

It was built between 1901 and 1978, and the biggest allowed speed for diesel rail cars is 50 to 70 (80) km/h.

Along the railroad, there are 26 servicing points, including 13 stations (one of which is a cargo station), 11 stops and two hubs. The stations on the railroad are: Ruma, Budjanovci, Nikinci, Platicevo, Sabac, Stitar, Petlovaca, Prnjavor Macvanski, Lesnica, Loznica, Koviljaca, Brasina and Zvornik.

The civil engineering structures on the route encompass four tunnels (with a total length of 320 m), seven concrete bridges (with a total length of 754 m) and 10 steel bridges (with a total length of 155 m). In addition to that, there are 71 culverts, 45 plate culverts and three arch culverts, 113 road crossings and eight support walls.

In 2018, the section from Sabac to Brasina, 53 km long, was overhauled, whereby, after 13 years, the conditions were met for the establishment of regular passenger rail traffic between Sabac and Loznica. Around two and a half billion dinars was invested in this reconstruction.
