For the residents of New Belgrade and Zemun, that section will be fastest connection with the Milos Veliki Highway, shorter by around 10 kilometers, because it will enable them to connect to the Milos Veliki Highway directly from Vojvodjanska Street and Dr Ivana Ribara Street in New Belgrade, instead of accessing the highway through a section of the Belgrade-Zagreb highway.
The New Belgrade-Surcin section has three lanes in each direction, 3.5 meters wide, a median of 5 meters, pedestrian lanes 2 meters wide and a bicycle lane 2.2 meters wide.
It is designed for a speed of 80 km/h and features four bridges and two overpasses.
The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, who attended the opening, said that it was a key section for Belgrade. The section opened to traffic at 9 PM this Saturday.
The president announced the opening of several highway sections, as well as an expansion of the roundabout near the opened highway section, which was a bottleneck, and “that was noticed seven months ago.”
The commercial contract with China Communications Construction Company on the construction of the section from New Belgrade to Surcin was signed in August 2019.
The works on this traffic route began in March 2021, which was later than the planned deadline, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
